2022, Acta PsychologicaCitation Excerpt :For example, numerical reasoning—which is typically conceptualized as mathematical problem solving (Wechsler, 2001)—usually involves the following steps: understanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and looking back (Polya, 1954). Similarly, unlike simple arithmetic, which focuses on fact retrieval, complex computation also requires the mastering of a series of calculation steps, the use of basic formula representations, and even storage of operation processes in memory (Andersson, 2008; Zago et al., 2001). Complex computation, numerical reasoning, and arithmetic learning are slow processes that require the application of knowledge to solve problems.
