Introducción
La enfermedad hepática grasa no alcohólica (EHGNA) se ha convertido en la causa más frecuente de enfermedad hepática crónica en niños y adultos, asociada con la epidemia mundial de obesidad y síndrome metabólico (SMet)1, 2, 3, y es una causa creciente de enfermedad hepática avanzada en Europa4, 5. En los próximos años, la EHGNA y la enfermedad hepática alcohólica se convertirán en las causas más prevalentes de hepatopatía crónica en nuestro medio. La incidencia de nuevos casos de hepatopatía
¿Cuál es la prevalencia de EHGNA en la población general?
Los datos respecto a la prevalencia de EHGNA varían en función de la población estudiada (edad, sexo, raza, comorbilidades), de las diferencias geográficas y de los métodos diagnósticos utilizados. La mayoría de datos sobre la prevalencia de EHGNA proceden de estudios que han usado técnicas no invasivas, especialmente ecografía o resonancia magnética (RM)2, 3.

La EHGNA incluye un amplio espectro de enfermedades que van desde la esteatosis hepática simple a la EHNA con fibrosis2, 15. La EHNA puede evolucionar a fibrosis avanzada, cirrosis y CHC, con una mortalidad del 10-12% a los 10-15 años del diagnóstico25. Las comorbilidades de los pacientes con EHGNA condicionan su supervivencia, teniendo como denominador común la RI y el SMet43, 44, 45, 46, 47, de forma que la principal causa de muerte de estos pacientes es la enfermedad coronaria142, 143, 144,
