Strategies for function integration in engineering design: from differential design to function adoption

Abstract

Present day’s products are more complex in order to fulfill the customer’s needs and legal requirements. This often leads to increasing product weight and costs and to a decrease of the available installation space. An approach for solving this challenge is to integrate functions into existing structures. Therefore, different strategies from differential design to function adoption are described. Taking into account function relevant questions based on module drivers, specific strategies for function integration can be chosen. The approach can be repeated for multiple applications and for different geometrical forms in order to develop new solutions for function integration.
