  • Abstract:

The short-term streamflow forecasting such as hourly or daily is of vital importance for flood mitigation and defense. The accuracy of forecasts is influenced by both the quality of past data and the method selected to forecast the future. In this study, a hybrid wavelet neural network (WNN) model we boarded to predict streamflow through a combination of two techniques, wavelet transform and artificial neural networks (ANN). ANNs have shown great ability in modeling and forecasting of nonstationary and nonlinear time series, and wavelet transform provide useful decomposition on several resolution levels. The decomposed subsignals were fed as input to ANN to get the forecasted streamflow values for various time horizons. Forecasting models ANN and WNN are applied to daily streamflow data in the first gauging station (Tamshiyacu) into the mainstream of the Amazon river basin in Peru. The relative performance of these models were measured using various forecast skill criteria and verified with data untrained, using Matlab (R.2013a). The results in terms of root mean square error (RMSE) y coefficient of determination (R2) showed the effectiveness and significant improvement of the hybrid WNN model compared to the other standard technique ANN, and it is concluded that the method applied is potentially very useful for short-term streamflow forecasting.
