[Discuss-DOI] DOI as URN NID -Reply
Yes, Tony raises a valid point. We plan to do this and have been waiting
for :
1. the dust to settle with the migration of IANA into ICANA.
2. a view on whether we should register doi, hdl, or both.
3. any fall-out of URN and URI discussions, as there is perhaps some
tension between two views here (as elsewhere!)
Clearly these will not all be answered definitively in the near future so we
will probably go ahead and register placeholder NIDs.
I will be pursuing this.

The "URI discussion paper and recommendations" by Titia van der Werf
is a
wonderful resume of the URI landscape and I am much indebted to
receive this
valuable collection of links to reference RFCs and Internet Drafts.
It does, however, prompt the question of what plans the IDF currently has
for
registering DOI as a namespace identifier (NID) with IANA. I raise this as a
matter of some timeliness as I would like to be able to incorporate
meaningful
attributes such as
uri="urn:doi:10.1006/viro.1998.9575"
into metadata records of our online journal holdings. We could always
proceed on
this basis anyway on the assumption that one day the DOI will indeed be
a
registered URN NID, even though currently with the DOI as identifier we
are in
limbo land. I was wondering if there is any reason why the NID should not
be
reserved now ahead of time.
