Rights societies and their members can achieve greater efficiency by replacing the archaic practice of paper exchange with contemporary electronic exchange of data across wide area networks. This will reduce the current labour intensive practice of manually identifying musical works by matching titles and the surnames of writers rather than achieve a single computer match by unique number. Likewise, music users, specifically broadcasters and record companies, must be given the mechanisms to report reliable and recognisable usage data in an automated way to societies. Greater efficiency from the standardisation of data will speed up the task of processing information required to grant permission to music users and to distribute royalties to copyright owners.
