To realise the full value of its investment CIS must extend its influence into the digital world it is trying so hard to organise by ensuring that identifiers are incorporated into the digital objects themselves. There must be a unified approach by societies and rights holders to establish control over the use of their copyrights by working with the producers of digitised material to:
- manage content identification within digital objects
- support licensing and other key transactions
- provide solutions for the automated tracking and monitoring of digital creations
- and to track content manipulation and modification history
These are an ambitious set of objectives: and yet it is crucial that they are met if rights owners are to be satisfied that it is in their best interests to make their assets available over the Internet.
It is highly likely that DOI will play a significant part in achieving all of these objectives.
