Broadly, the experimental procedures included behavioural measures of overt vocal singing and language out-of-scanner, and functional imaging measures of covert vocal singing and language in-scanner, using methods previously published by our group (Wood et al., 2001; Wilson et al., 2011, 2012). Covert language and singing paradigms were used to minimise movement and respiratory artefacts and to focus the analysis on higher cognitive representations rather than the primary sensory and motor aspects of singing and speech production (Wilson et al., 2011, 2012).

2012, NeuropsychologiaCitation Excerpt :Research has indicated that the cholinergic system is asymmetrically distributed in the brain, with the left hemisphere having greater concentration of ACh (Kononenko, 1980) and ChAT (Glick, Ross, & Hough, 1982). A fMRI study of normal participants during their performance of the COWA revealed that the left frontal lobe (middle and inferior frontal gyri) was more activated than the right (Wood, Saling, Abbott, & Jackson, 2001). Thus, it is possible that a phonological-lexical task, such as the COWA is mediated primarily by a left hemispheric fronto-temporoparietal network.
