Abstract

The paper deals with the feasibility of polymeric coatings onto conductive substrates by electropolymerization as a new technique of metal protection. Although in theory the electropolymerization might provide by only one stage preparation of the polymer, spreading over the substrate and possibly crosslinking to insoluble networks, the situation is not so favorable. As a matter of fact, reviewing the work performed so far reveals that the polymerization “in situ” of traditional acrylic monomers, when possible, involves high current consumption and leads to unsatisfactory coatings. The reasons of such results are interpreted on the basis of both low production of radical initiator at the electrode and desorption phenomena: thus the most promising routes for further investigation are outlined.
