Liquid Crystal Polymers I

Part of the book series: Advances in Polymer Science ((POLYMER,volume 59))

Abstract

This review is be concerned primarily with the synthesis and properties of such polymers which show thermotropic behaviour.

The literature on this subject can be organized in several ways, but the most straightforward method is to compare the effect of polymer structure on physical properties. These properties are principally a function of three structural variables: the type of mesogenic unit and the length and type of flexible spacer. This review is, therefore, organized to treat these variables, starting with a discussion of the effects of the mesogenic unit on polymer properties and followed by a consideration of the changes in polymer behaviour caused by the use of different flexible spacers. The methods used for the characterization of LC polymers are also discussed where appropriate.
