Biochemistry of lipids in plant cell cultures

Abstract

The composition of lipid classes and the patterns of constituent fatty acids of lipids from hetero-trophic, photomixotrophic and photoautotrophic cultures are described and compared. the role of cultural conditions in stimulating the production of certain lipid classes and fatty acids is discussed. a review is given of the knowledge available on the biosynthesis and degradation of triacylglycerols, of various phospholipids and galactolipids, as well as of fatty acids and sterols. the advantages of cell culture techniques in basic and applied lipid research are illustrated and some further applications are suggested.
