Summary
Sustained or elevated pressures acting on the skin and superficial tissues are a major factor in the initiation of pressure sores. Numerous devices have been developed to measure the interface pressure between patients and support surfaces. Some of the more successful devices are described and their suitability for research and clinical use critically examined. It is suggested that simple inflatable sensors are suitable for routine clinical use. The clinical importance and usefulness of pressure measurements is discussed.
