Abstract

The purpose of immunogenetic testing in kidney transplantation is to minimize post-transplant acute rejection episodes and to decrease the intensity of chronic rejection. To the degree that the kidney donor is mismatched with the recipient there will be an increased number of targets for both the cellular and humoral immune responses. To the degree that the recipient has been sensitized against donor antigens, there will be greater risk for rejection episodes. This chapter is an exposition of what histocompatibility testing is and how it is done.
