Abstract

Cooperative and distributed communication systems represent an import shift of the classical historic role of the physical layer functionality. Traditionally, the physical layer was viewed in a point-to-point communication perspective. All communication tasks related to the information transfer in a more complicated multiple-source and multiple-node network were delegated to upper layers. Cooperative and distributed systems can be viewed as the physical layer coding and processing algorithms aware and actively utilizing the knowledge of the network structure/topology. These algorithms do not depend or rely on the orthogonal spectrum sharing technique (e.g. CDMA, OFDMA). Even the simplest scenario (e.g. the bidirectional relay communication) shows a substantial throughput improvement.

The chapter is organized into three sections according to the particular system scenario. The first focuses on the single-source and multiple-node or relay scenario. The second focuses on scenario with multiple sources and multiple interim nodes or relays. The last one concentrates mainly on the distributed signal processing and coding.
