Summary
In the laboratory, fetch limited pattern of water surface waves at strong winds are seen to develop in three different ways associated with different and consecutive regions: a linear region, in which waves grow exponentially without length change, a saturation region in which waves lengthen (number of waves is not preserved) while maintaining their shape, and a breaking region. The generation process of the first ripples and some characteristics of the waves in the saturation zone are discussed in this paper.
