Abstract

CSS, used extensively for nuclear power plant components, has complex grain structures that compromise the accuracy of ultrasonic examination. Figure 1 shows a pipe-to-elbow joint that is typically used in many pressurized water reactors (PWRs). The joint has a columnar-dendritic grain structure at one end and an equiaxed grain structure at the other. Ultrasonic wave propagation is significantly different in these two structures.
