Magnetic Properties of an Iron-Rich Glass

Amorphous Magnetism

Abstract

Measurements of the magnetic moment of a glass containing 40 wt% Fe2O3 indicate that the superparamagnetic behavior observed above 100°K can be explained by the presence of antiferromagnetically ordered microdomains with a Néel temperature of about 700°K. Below 100°K the behavior is not simply superparamagnetic, and a number of the thermal history and other effects observed are similar to those that characterize mictomagnetic spin glasses.
