Abstract
A career in surgical research is highly rewarding; however, balancing research and clinical demands is challenging, and in particular, managing the transition from resident to faculty can be difficult. Planning ahead and understanding and managing expectations are keys to success. In this chapter, I outline important considerations when applying for and negotiating job opportunities. I also describe common challenges for researchers early in their career including developing a program of research, finding mentors, and time management. Finally, I discuss the common metrics of research productivity, publications, and funding and provide tips to increase the likelihood of success.
