Abstract

Present methods for the analysis of feed medicaments do not ordinarily include polarography but usually consist of colorimetric, ultraviolet, chromatographic or chemical procedures. While many of these methods are well established and quite satisfactory, some have limitations in terms of time required for analysis, their non-specific nature, or erratic results. The use of polarography for the analysis of feed additions has been investigated by several groups, but has not received generally adequate recognition. The purpose of this presentation, then, is to show that polarography has a place in feed additive analysis and may be used in conjunction with other methods such as infrared spectrophotometry or gas chromatography for qualitative and quantitative interpretation of data. There are applications to metabolism studies and other research projects involving feed additives that may lead to improved analytical procedures or ways to study the effectiveness of these compounds.
