Abstract

Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is widely used in the esophagus for the management of precancerous and early superficial cancers. This is routinely performed in the management of patients with Barrett’s-related dysplasia and early esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) and in patients with squamous cell dysplasia and early cancer. EMR is recommended for all visible and nodular lesions, allowing for an accurate diagnosis of the grade of dysplasia. This resection method has been widely shown to be a safe and effective resection method, and various EMR techniques exist for the resection within the esophagus. The development of quality metrics for EMR will be crucial in the changing healthcare landscape, and standardized training programs will be necessary for its safe and effective use.
