Abstract

This chapter focuses on acts of resistance on the part of the teachers in the Discussion and Communication Program. The chapter describes how teachers engaged in unconscious acts of resistance against the program, which took many different forms. It is shown how the teachers acted against the strictures imposed on them by the program through engaging in subversive activities which created “free spaces” in which they could question and challenge the established practices of the program. Evidence is given to demonstrate that this creation of free spaces served to go against some of the native-speakerist discourses and practices of the program. These acts of resistance allowed the instructors to enact ‘frame transformations’, in which they were able to gain a new perspective on the course and challenge, even inadvertently, the native-speakerist discourses which underlay the dominant ‘native speaker’ framing evident within it.
