Redefining the Psychological Contract in the Digital Era

Abstract

Organisational scholars have long been interested in the employer–employee relationship and the expectations and obligations that evolve within this relationship, which is encapsulated within the psychological contract. Psychological contracts are considered dynamic, and since their conceptualisation has evolved over time, they remain an important research topic in organisational sciences. The study will evaluate the underlying facets encapsulated within the psychological contract over the last decade within the South African context. The study will follow a qualitative approach, employing a systematic review of international and local databases. The study will provide insights into the changing nature of the psychological contract and provide direction for future research in terms of a future digitalised workplace. The research has potential to provide direction for future research and provide a narrative insight to advance psychological contract theory.
