Abstract
A plethora of literature concerning cancer survivorship exists, including research concerning quality of life through the cancer trajectory (e.g., diagnosis to the end of life). A separate but related literature exists for cancer caregivers. Although the intersection between patient and caregiver survivorship exists in reality, the link between the two is nonexistent in the research literature. The support from the medical team who cares for the patient often abruptly ends when treatment is discontinued. For the minority of patients diagnosed with cancer who are referred to hospice, bereavement support is offered but rarely utilized for the caregivers after the loss of their loved one (Casarett and Quill, Ann Inter Med 146:443–449, 2007 ; Reid et al., Int J Palliat Nurs 12(9):430–437, 2006). The goal of this chapter is to begin to bring these two areas of research together and bridge this critical intersection in the patient and caregivers’ life.
