Clinical Approaches to Hospital Medicine

Abstract

Recent polling estimates that 5.6% of the American population identifies as LGBTQ+, which is more than 1% higher than previous estimates from 2017. More specifically, these percentages are higher among younger people, and the data for Generation Z (people aged 18–23 in 2020) shows that one in six people identify as LGBTQ+ [2]. As this percentage increases, a growing number of physicians and healthcare workers are going to be involved in the care of patients identifying as a part of this group. Therefore, it is important to understand this population’s unique medical needs and relationship with the healthcare system.
