Abstract

This chapter explores and confers ways to integrate land and the human environment to promote the growth of efficient Special Economic Zones (SEZ) in Africa. Research & Development (R&D) enhancement has been one of the key critical aspects of promoting urban growth in the digital age and innovation in spatial planning. Creative and Innovative activities such as Special Economic Zones (SEZ) have been key tools in the growth of self-sufficient and sustainable urban areas in the Global South. The physical space and place surrounding society are vital aspects that make up a human landscape relationship. A human landscape relationship reveals that space cannot exist on its own. Rather, it is the relationship between two bodies which is the geographical plain and the cultural environment. The process of converting space into a place means that one is converting land into a meaningful location. Therefore, there is a need to analyze how space and place can be defined in promoting efficiency in Special Economic Zones (SEZ). The chapter engaged the pragmatic research philosophy in its quest to assess the implications of place and space in economic and spatial planning. The chapter engaged documentary analysis, desktop research, and secondary data sources such as journals, policy papers, and books.
