Abstract

To optimize utilization, access, and outcomes related to a limited resource, the field of organ transplantation evolved under a framework of regulatory and reporting agencies such as the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network, the United Network for Organ Sharing, the End Stage Renal Disease Network, the Joint Commission, and several federal agencies. A brief overview of the data collection requirements for organ transplant programs is presented. Regulatory reviews, compliance data, clinical practice, and outcomes data are readily available to institutions with superior transparency, laying the foundation for superior capability for performance improvement, whose principles and processes are outlined.
