Abstract

This introductory chapter provides the scientific context for this thesis. It presents an overview of the evolution of massive stars, including a discussion of the main persisting uncertainties in stellar evolution, and a discussion of the study of massive stars as part of stellar populations. It also provides a description of the profound effects a binary companion can have on the evolution of a massive star, and describes observational constraints and theoretical predictions for populations of massive binary stars. A review of the observational characteristics of the products of binary interactions is further given. In this context, classical Be stars are introduced. Finally, the motivation for this thesis and the open questions that will be addressed are presented.
