Abstract
Closed-loop controlled weld processes in uncertain conditions in car body construction result into varying process times. In order to identify causes of time variation, GRAFCETs of resistance spot welding and arc stud welding of an automotive body-in-white assembly line are analyzed. With the help of production data, the impact of varying process times on workstation performance is evaluated. The analysis shows, that all welding processes contain process steps causing time variation, of which resistance spot welding with multimodal distributed process times has the highest impact on performance on production and the robotic assembly line balancing problem. Considering the high volume of resistance spot welding in car body construction, this demonstrates the importance of comprehensive examinations of the technologies to be used and adequate distribution assumptions for the process times.
