Abstract
Although widely perceived as a disease that is little more than a trivial and transient nuisance of childhood, epidemiological statistics collected over the last decade clearly indicate that asthma is anything but unimportant. Across the developed world the incidence and prevalence of asthma have reached epidemic proportions. The reasons for this are unknown. Asthma is potentially a fatal disease afflicting as many as 5–9% of the population. Increasing evidence suggests that as well as causing episodic disease symptoms long-standing asthma is a serious risk factor for progression to irreversible debilitating fixed airway obstruction.
