Abstract
The hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) complicate approximately 10% of pregnancies worldwide and represent a major health issue, contributing to significant maternal-perinatal morbidity and mortality not only in developing countries but also in the Western world, where improved medical care is counterbalanced by an increased incidence.
In this chapter, after a brief introduction describing the physiological changes of pregnancy, we discuss the most recent classifications of HDP, highlighting their discordances as well as similarities, with special emphasis on blood pressure and proteinuria measurement. A section is devoted to chronic hypertension in pregnancy and its management. The core of this chapter is dedicated to preeclampsia with subsections covering epidemiology and risk factors, pathogenesis, predictors/biomarkers, clinical features and complications, medical and obstetrical management, and prevention. Finally, possible later-life sequelae are briefly discussed.
