Abstract
Sexually transmitted diseases may cause perianal or anal lesions or ulcers, or proctitis. A high level of suspicion must be maintained in order to avoid misdiagnosis or delays in diagnosis and treatment, especially as symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases overlap with symptoms of anal fissures, hemorrhoids, cryptoglandular disease, and inflammatory bowel disease. A significant proportion of patients with sexually transmitted diseases are asymptomatic, making diagnosis even more elusive. In addition to empiric treatment, and following screening and retesting guidelines, counseling patients on ways to reduce risk of transmission and re-infection.
