Bereits im 18. Jahrhundert wurden Herzrhythmusstörungen (HRST) im Kindesalter beschrieben, aber die Therapie beschränkte sich für lange Zeit auf vagale Manöver und Digitalis. Mit der Einführung neuer Medikamente erfolgte ihre Anwendung auch bei Kindern, nachdem zuvor Erfahrungen bei Erwachsenen vorlagen. Gerade im Kindesalter sind aber Nebenwirkungen bei längerer Therapie nicht selten, zudem ist eine zuverlässige und anhaltende Wirkung häufig nicht gegeben, da meist nur die Symptome behandelt werden. Die chirurgische Therapie von HRST versprach dagegen erstmalig eine definitive Heilung, war jedoch mit dem nicht unerheblichen Risiko einer invasiven Prozedur verbunden (Cobb et al. 1968).
