Versteht man unter „Routinelabor“ das Anforderungsprofil, das unabhängig von Anamnese und klinischem Befund bei jedem Patienten mit zunächst unbekannter Diagnose oder unbekannter Komplikation eines Patienten mit bekannter Diagnose sinnvoll und notwendig ist, so sind vereinfacht zwei Situationen zu unterscheiden:
