Abstract
Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) has become the mainstay of treatment for patients with severe refractory angina and extensive coronary artery disease (CAD). Approximately 170,000 operations were performed in 1983 in the United States at a cost of $ 20,000 to $ 25,000 per operation for a total cost of between 3 and 4 billion dollars. Hence, CABG contributes significantly to total health care costs and requires special scrutiny to determine whether these costs are justified by the added health benefits enjoyed by recipients.
