Abstract
Combined nitrogen is probably the limiting nutrient factor for primary production in many tundra areas. The removal of combined nitrogen from tundra areas by leaching or denitrification seems limited, and even a small nitrogen input from e.g. nitrogen fixation is important for the nitrogen balance of the ecosystem. The main sources of nitrogen input are biological nitrogen fixation, precipitation and dry deposition. Nitrogen-fixing organisms present in tundra areas are free-living, epiphytic and symbiotic blue-green algae, and free-living and symbiotic bacteria.
