Abstract

In the recent experiments of mass spectroscopy for various kinds of small clusters, the pronounced abundance has been observed at certain numbers of atoms forming a cluster. These special numbers of atoms are usually called “magic numbers” of a cluster. The magic number is considered to be determined by relative stability of clusters of different sizes. KNIGHT et al. [1] have assigned the magic number of sodium clusters as the number of valence electrons giving a closed shell configuration of quantum states in the spherical square well or its modification called Wood-Saxon potential. This model is quite similar to the shell model in nuclear physics.
