Continuum Theory of Dislocations and Plasticity

Mechanics of Generalized Continua

Part of the book series: IUTAM Symposia ((IUTAM))

Abstract

Dislocations as line imperfections in crystals have already found extensive use in the description and interpretation of the mechanical properties of materials. Very little work however has been done towards their application to problems in structural analysis and continuum mechanics. This paper summarizes the author’s previous work [1–6] and extends these ideas to the field of continuum plasticity.

The research upon which this paper was based was supported by the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the Department of Defense, through the Northwestern University Materials Research Center.
