Zusammenfassung
Eine Matrix A ∈ M(m × n, \({\mathbb{K}}\)) ordnet einem Spaltenvektor x ∈ \({\mathbb{K}}^{n}\) über das Matrix-Vektor-Produkt einen Spaltenvektor y = Ax ∈ \({\mathbb{K}}^{m}\) zu. Somit vermittelt A eine Abbildung vom Vektorraum \({\mathbb{K}}^{n}\) in den Vektorraum \({\mathbb{K}}^{m}\). Hierbei gilt einerseits das Distributivgesetz A(x1+x2) = Ax1+Ax2 für alle x1, x2 ∈ \({\mathbb{K}}^{n}\) , während andererseits für jeden Skalar λ ∈ \({\mathbb{K}}\) die Regel A(λx) = λ(Ax) gilt.
