Abstract
We have investigated the effects of Gd2BaCuO5 (Gd211) second phase and Pt addition on the microstructure and Jc-B properties of OCMG-processed (Nd0.33Eu0.33Gd0.33) Ba2Cu3Oy (NEG123) system with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and DC magnetization measurements. Microstructural observations clearly indicated that the platinum addition was effective in refining the Gd211 second phase like the case of Y2BaCuO5 (Y211) in the YBa2Cu3Oy (Y123) system. Compositional analyses revealed that small RE211 particles mainly consist of Gd in the RE site, while large RE211 particles contain Nd, Eu and Gd. The sample NEG123 added with 30 mol% of second phase Gd211 showed respective critical current densities of 83000, 54000 A/cm2 in 0 and 2 T at 77 K for fields parallel to the c axis.
