Abstract
The tribe Triticeae Dumort (Hordeae Benth.), a festucoid tribe of the family Poaceae (Gramineae), has long been and still is of great economic importance to humanity. The tribe contains three of the major cereals — barley, rye and wheat — that have been used since prehistoric times, as well as the recently constructed cereal Triticale. Triticale is a synthetic amphiploid between wheat (Triticum spp.) and rye (Secale spp.) (see Chapter 7). Several other members of the tribe are also important as forage and pasture grasses.
