Abstract

Large amounts of renewable vegetable fibrous matter are produced annually in different areas of the world. For a long time, especially before the advent of synthetic polymers, some of these natural fibers were the main supply for diverse cordage and textile products. In fact, a few of them had found use in ancient times in pottery and structural elements, such as straw clay compositions for bricks,1 which can be considered as the precursors of modern composite materials.
