Abstract
An in-reactor experimental research on fuel behavior under reactivity initiated accident(RIA) conditions has been progressed in the Nuclear Safety Research Reactor(NSRR). LWR type fuel rods were irradiated by a pulse burst power in the water environment.
Through the experiments, it is found that fuel failure modes are characterized in followings in the RIA events. Those are;
-
(1)
cladding melting and/or brittle failure,
-
(2)
fuel pellet melting failure,
-
(3)
high temperature cladding burst,
-
(4)
low temperature cladding burst, and
-
(5)
pellet-cladding mechanical interaction (PCMI) failure.
The failure modes change depending on heat generation, burn-up, internal pressure and existense of warer in the fuel rod.
In this report, fuel failure modes observed in the RIA, status of studies on failure mechanism and future work of the NSRR program are introduced.
