Abstract

Some basic tools for the modeling of the dynamical properties of the diffuse interstellar medium are reviewed. First, an overview of fluid mechanics is given. Then, basic phenomena are presented: radiative losses, shocks, ionization fronts, and electron thermal conduction. These tools and building blocks are then applied to model idealized versions of localized dynamical situations in the diffuse interstellar medium. Some observational constraints on global models of the interstellar medium are briefly discussed.
