Abstract

There is in the story of mathematics a problem, the so-called Riemann-Helmholtz-Lie problem of space, to which Poincaré gave an important and final contribution concerning two-dimensional space. Of this problem I shall only speak allusively, although mathematical methods are presupposed everywhere by Poincaré’s philosophy of space. Even when concepts seem to be borrowed from experience, idealization has to transform them into geometrical tools.
