Abstract
Consider the following sentences:
-
(1)
You live here now.
-
(2)
Live (you) here now!
-
(3)
Do you live here now?
These three sentences have something in common, which, following Wittgenstein’s terminology, I call the sentence-radical 1 ; what is different in each of them I call the modal element. The sentence-radical signifies the descriptive content of the sentence, the modal element signifies its mood.

Cf. L. Wittgenstein, Philosophical Investigations t p. 11, and E. Stenius, Wittgenstein’s Tractatus: A Critical Exposition, pp. 159–162. In accordance with the terminology of the latter book, I speak here of ‘sentences’ and ‘sentence-radicals’, though ‘statements’ and ‘statement-radicals’ would perhaps be more in accordance with modern philosophical usage. In the Philosophical Investigations Wittgenstein’s term Satzradikal is rendered as ‘proposition-radical’.
