The Future of Dynamic Structural Science

Abstract

The principles underlying time-resolved emission and absorption spectroscopy are reviewed with emphasis on the relationship between molecular structure, electronic energy states and spectroscopic data. The techniques and instrumentation that allow time-resolution to be achieved in electronic spectroscopy down to the femtosecond time region are described and their applications to studies of photo-induced energy and electron transfer processes discussed with selected examples. The extension of transient spectroscopy techniques to small spatial scales are outlined including the techniques of time-resolved fluorescence microscopy, super-resolution microscopy, single molecule spectroscopy and x-ray based time-resolved structural studies. Examples are provided of the complementary information that can be obtained by the various time and space-resolved spectroscopy methods.
