Abstract
The NDIS is expected to increase demand for affordable housing, since many participants will receive the support funding they need to transition into more independent living arrangements. However, housing options for NDIS participants, in both the private housing market and the social housing system, are extremely limited. Except for a small minority (6%) of NDIS participants who will be eligible for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), there are currently inadequate provisions within both the NDIS and beyond it to address the housing needs of over 100,000 NDIS participants. To address these issues, this chapter calls for a review and expansion of the housing responsibilities of the NDIS, such that it plays a more proactive and meaningful role in addressing the unmet housing needs of its participants.
