Abstract

Since Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) have started to bloom in education industry, there are many discussions about their design, structure, effectiveness and openness to the community. It is undeniable that MOOCs have changed the teaching and learning style of students and lecturers. The purpose of this study is to explore the perception of learners towards the usage of MOOCs based on Activity Theory. Besides that, this study also investigates the current issues faced by learners in using MOOCs and suggests ways of improvement. Questionnaires were distributed to 160 learners to fill in. Results indicated that most of the learners agree that MOOCs are useful in their learning and they claim that it has improved their learning. They are satisfied with MOOCs and will recommend MOOCs to their peers. In overall, the availability of MOOCs to the world and the free accessibility has become the reason why it is popular among learners. They believe that soon MOOCs will be able to complement the traditional teaching method in order to make the learning process more effective. Due to time constraints, the information obtained was from a small part of the community in the country and hard for generalization. In the future, research can be expanded to focus on the different parts of the country and various disciplines such as business and engineering. Lastly, with the result obtained in this research, it will be able to contribute to universities and institutions that plan to introduce and implement MOOCs as a guide for them as design and implementation.
