Résumé
-
1)

Summary
-
1)
Speed of development, speed of growth and survival during embryonic life of salmon, sea trout and brown trout and of their reciprocal hybrids, have been measured at five constant temperatures; Oxygen consumption has been determined in the course of embryonic and larval development at a single temperature.
-
2)
All the measured traits are characteristic for each form. Reciprocal hybrids always differ.
-
3)
The three traits can be related to each other, if it is admitted that they are determined by two interacting causes. The first is a rate with a constant acceleration with respect to the reverse of absolute temperatures. The second is a rate with a variable acceleration with respect to the same values and which crosses the first curve at two points. The second curve is directly related to developmental speed. Survival and length at hatching, at each temperature and in each form, are simple functions of the proportionate deviations of the two curves from each other. The intersections of both curves determine two optimal temperatures for survival and growth in each form.
-
4)
the reciprocal crosses have shown that the first, constantly accelerated curve, is in fact transmitted by the nucleus. The second curve is transmitted through the (maternal) cytoplasm. The nuclear curve of the hybrids, identical in reciprocal cross products, is acceleration rated with respect to the parental curves, presumably as a result of an interaction between the two chromosome sets. The behaviour of the hybrids can be accounted for on the basis of an interaction between this new nuclear curve and the cytoplasmic curve derived from the mother.

5)
The bearings of the results and of the new hypothesis on homeostatic and adaptive mechanisms, on the origin of heterosis and on the systematics of the salmonids, are discussed.
