Abstract
This paper is a review of certain lunar features with specific regard to those found in the crater Tsiolkovsky.
Tsiolkovsky is unique on the Moon's far hemisphere because of its central peak and mare filling. Its size, shape and dark coloured floor make it a distinctive feature of lunar topography.
Looking at the crater floor in detail, endogenic features can be distinguished from impact craters and successive lava flows can be detected. Many geological and geomorphological features can be seen: volcanic vents and domes, graben and other faults, dykes, lava tubes, compression ridges and slumping.
These are the same features as seen in near-side mare, therefore the processes that formed them can be assumed to be the same. This paper applies some of the theories of formation of the geological, geomorphological and impact structures to the lunar crater Tsiolkovsky and its mare floor. The paper forms the descriptive basis for a companion paper on dating of the mare in Tsiolkovsky using the crater counting method.
